    Is my turbo packing up?

Just taken the pipe off that connects the top of the intercooler with the tophat/throttle body. A bit of oil in their so I loosened the pipes when it was running and looked at the air being pushed out from the turbo.

What is the air supposed to be like if all is well?

    Cheers, Bri

I did the same a few weeks back and popped the pipe off, there was some oil.

Think your best bet mate, is to jack up the car, and pop off the boost pipe off the bottom of the turbo and see if there is anything in there.

It could be old oil from if it was done before

I am guessing its the original at only 34500 miles (03' GSi). What am i looking for when I get the boost pipe off to tell if it needs replacing.

Can I get to the pipe without taking anything else off (eg. bumper, rad, etc)?

Is it supposed to push out clean, cool air because mine is not. More like whiteish smoke and warm. Not ticking over very nice, a bit rough and car seems to be holding back and lacking power. Has also misfired previously bringing up the fault codes.

    Cheers, Bri

If it's a trickle of oil that's normal. If you get met with a small ocean then fair to say the turbo's had it.

Also if you are running an aftermarket dump valve, if oil is leaking out of it that can also indicate broken turbo

Yup one 7mm nut on the hose clip and pop off the boost pipe, if there is a small amount of Oil then thats ok, if its a good splashing then I'd say replace it

I took my lower boost pipe off today and the pipe going to the intercooler, and out the bottom of the turbo was bone dry

If the turbo is worn will it only leak out oil or is their a chance that exhaust gases will come through as well?

Well the smell won't be pure air mate, it probably will smell of dull fumes, as it is heated up a bit.
