    2010 1.7 CDTI loud clattering noise from cold

    Hi all,

    Getting rather concerned with the din my new 1.7 CDTI makes when starting from cold. It makes a horrible clattering noise for around 30 seconds then peters out and sounds normal afterwards. I know diesels are noisy from cold, but I've had plenty of diesel engines in my lifetime and nothing has sounded like this, it's on a whole new level of noise .

    I've checked the oil level and it's marginally above the max marker on the dipstick. It's made this noise from new and it's just coming up to 1000 miles.

    I'm thinking it's oil pick-up related, ie. there is no oil lubrication happening for the first 30 seconds til it pulls some up to the top of the engine, hence the noise, but surely this can't be doing the engine any good?

    Any ideas folks?

    I get a similar sort of noise when starting from cold but it only lasts for abour 2 seconds and it doesnt always happen.

    If its lasting for 30 seconds it doesnt sound good, take it back to VX and get it checked out

    Thanks Dean. That's what I'm thinking too - a couple of seconds is to be expected while it picks up the oil, but going on for nearly 30 seconds doesn't seem right to me.

    Trouble is I'll have to leave it overnight with Vx as it only does from first cold start and it has to be clap cold for it to do it.

    HI, I was searching for a post that might help us figure what's wrong with my Daughters Astra.
    Your description sounds just like what we have.

    Did you manage to get it fixed?

    We've figured it must be on the alternator as it doesn't do it with the auxiliary belt taken off. We've now got a short belt on so the air con pump isn't in use.

    The only thing that is turning is the alternator. Gives the sound (really metallic) and the fact the alternator is working we think it's the vac pump.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    i had same problem with a 09 palte 1.7 cdti. I left with vx dealers over night.
    it also had a slight missfire at aroun 1200rpm. turned out to be faulty injectors

    I did a 500 mile round trip shortly after posting this thread and now the noise has gone. It's worth noting that the oil level on the stick is now at the max mark rather than being slightly above it so maybe there is/was some connection? Runs sweet as a nut now with no issues and pulls like a good'un since the remap.

    does it still knock when its been stood over night and started from cold?

    Nope. It's fine now. Just over 1000 miles on the clock.

    I'd be cautious of Vx saying injectors. There are plenty of stories to be found on the various forums showing that in 95% of cases they don't have a clue what causes the problem and they just throw parts at it in the hope that it fixes it. Certainly if it's still under warranty with them then let them do it, but if it's out of warranty I'd be getting a second opinion from an indy Vx specialist.
