This is one lesson i have learnt the hard way, so thought i would share it with you so you can avoid my mistake.
The 'Earth Mod' has been around for some time, with many owners benefiting from rectifying what can only be described as a crap wiring job by Vauxhall.
My car has suffered from irratic idling for some time, but not to the extremes that some owners have experienced. And over this time i have replaced the following to know avail:
- Put standard water thermostat back in
- Iridium plugs, then Cossie plugs, then back to irdiums
- Coolant sensor
The coolant sensor was changed only yesterday, and in order to fit it, you need to move wires out of the way. Happens to be the same group of wires which the earth mod is for. By disturbing the wires, i made the standard 'earth crimp' even worse, hence today i have carried out the earth mod.
The results are as follows:
- Perfect idle: 750rpm
- Perfect cold start and tickover when warm
- Consistent coolant temperature of 82degrees
- Average miles per gallon has increased by 8!
Total cost = 3 inches of decent wire and solder.
I never considered doing the Earth Mod before, as i was told that post 2003 cars were fine, this is obviously not the case.
