    Oil Check

Got a Astra Vxr n i know your meant to check the oil when the engine is off but my dipstick doesnt read but as soon as i turn her on it reads on the dip. i think this is a bit weird maself. so my question is it should read when engine isnt on shouldnt it. n how do people check their engine off or on.

Dipstick should be able to read it when the engine is off. When you check the oil how hot is the engine?
i.e. just driven turned it off and suddenly checked oil then?

Best to check the oil when the engine is off when its cold or 30mins/hour after running the engine and it will give you more accurate.
Disclaimer - some of the above text may actually be sarcasm (believe it or not!)

Check with the engine off and has been off for about 15-30 minutes to let all the oil settle back into the sump. Full, it should hit the top line on the dipstick, usually there is a 1 litre difference between the bottom 'Min' mark and top 'Max' mark.

It will read 'full' because the engine has been splashing the oil around which will hit the dipstick - also, when being driven, any cornering etc. will throw oil around the sump again onto the dipstick.

If it reads low when the engine is off and has been off for 15mins or so, then it is low.
