We have just been through it all with the mortgage advisor.

    Basic costs would be roughly
    Rent/mortgage £xxxx
insurance (building + contents, income protection, life insurance) Might not all be applicable if renting. £50ish
Council tax £130 (probably slightly less)
    Gas £30
    leccy £30
    Water???
    Tv £15
    phone/DSL £30

Then anything else you want on top
    Food,
    mobiles
    sky
    cars

Depends what band the house sits in and what the local rates are I think. Different wherever you live! Maybe your local council website will have something???

If renting from a council or housing association then all you should need insurance wise is contents insurance, Private will depend on your contract with the renter.

No idea TBH. As the landlord owns the house, he may already be paying the building insurance but you may need to buy your own contents insurance. Income protection and life insurance will be personal choice I guess.

Council tax is banded, its based on how much the house was worth in 1991. List of bands is here

If you are renting you will need to pay a months rent or so up front too, so be prepared to fork over around 1k when you first move in! You get that month back when you leave provided the place hasn't been damaged etc, but just something to be aware of!
