Post Which journey would use more fuel for this?

    One for the whizz's.

If i travel home from the gym via the motorway, it's 8.4 miles. Whilst on the motorway i sit at a constant 60mph. the motorway entry is right next to the gym and the exit is right next to my house, so it's practically all motorway except perhaps 0.5 mile which would be 50mph zone.

The alternative is travelling through town.
30mph zones, but you'll be lucky if you get this due to the traffic. The final couple mile or so would be 50mph zone, but if there's other road users about which there generally is at that time, you'll be seeing about 40mph. There's the obvious stop start through town which is a couple mile perhaps.
The distance for this journey would be 5.5/6.0 mile.

I get a mixed MPG return of about 35-37, depending.
I have no specific town MPG returns, but i'd suspect 30-32mpg, 33mpg at best.

I know one is longer than the other, but it's also a constant speed with minimal gear changing ...... but as said, it's longer.

Which would you suspect would use less fuel & would it be a bit less or a fair bit less?

I aim for the gym 4 days a week minimum, so it adds up over time.

You seem to be that obsessed with saving fuel, you'd be better off running to the gym, pumping some iron, and running back. 2 birds with one stone and al that.
It's only 6 miles each way.

Not a hard calculation - you know your rough MPG for town and motorway driving, you know how far it is each route, work it out

motorway I would say, people forget that when your in town stop start driving it really depends how you drive..
when accelerating in my car through 1st+2nd gears I dont get more than 15mpg and thats average acceleration.

If you plonk your foot down for 5minute at 7mpg then complete the rest of the journey at 30mpg for say 100miles it will use alot more petrol than if you did say 25mpg at 100miles, its all relative...as in you will use 4.25(ish) times more petrol for the first 5minutes than u would

I find it really hard to explain but I know what I mean.. haha!

Common driver sense really. Driving a couple miles more sitting at a constant speed or start/stop through town! I dont bother with MPG, i just enjoy my car wherever that is!

    42mpg / 8.4 miles = 1/5th of a gallon
    32mpg/5.5 = 1/5.8th off a gallon

all depends on the actually mpg
i would say you could probably get better than 42 on the motorway
and probably alot worse than 32 in trafic
if it ant broke, don't fix it.....mod it! MK4 flip keys £13.99

Turns out this website works it out for you http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.shtml albeit in gallons, but that doesn't matter.

I'll use about 0.23gallons (whatever that is, CBA converting it) the motorway
    About 0.19gallons through town

    That's based on 37/38mpg @ 8.4mile on the motorway & 31mpg @ 6mile through town.

I don't have one of those fancy displays that give you your exact return for the journey you're doing, so 37mpg is just a guesstimate (as is 31mpg)

I knew there'd be some helpful soul to come along.

Just concentrate on the question in future

I just don't get why some people turn into whimsy Afars when you look to save money on fuel that's all.

Prices are going up as we know. If it was 1 journey a week then I wouldn't bother, but it's a min of 4 times.
Were all looking to save money. What's the difference between this & some folk looking to switch which brand of bread they buy in for e.g? Exactly:NONE!

I can afford it, but would rather go the cheaper way as I've not had a pay rise for 4 years & I'm not getting one any time soon. Do you know what fuel prices were 4yrs ago?? So we're effectively having a pay decrease.

Then people moan like funk when you look to save here & there.

Only thing is I don't know my accurate MPG returns for the journeys given. As said, I could be into the 40s for Mway.

    Rant over.
