My New Z22SE custom lump (by me)

well i brought a vectra wityh a 2.2 lump for £50 just for the engine.
    how it started

    removing the lump

    coming out.

    all out.

ready next to my tool box for stripping down.

stripped down and a big giant pile of parts.

the block and crank out and all naked.

the head in the washer getting ready to be sent off.

and one of the worst TB i have ever seen.

dropped the block off to get honed ready for new pistions and rings, while i was there i picked up the head which turned out to be all fine.
had a pressure test and a skim.
now to remove the valves ready for porting and polish.

And a quick mock up with the rocker cover on and this pic shows it true colour

    head being stripped down

    head all stripped down

how it started, got to be one of the worst casting ever.

starting to clean up the ports

i never took any pics of the head complete took hours prob around 20hrs in the end
picked my block up today which has been honned.
also picked up the balancer shafts cut down and machined to give a decent finish and my new z22yh con rods and pistons
i have to push the rear balancer shafts bearings back by 7.5mm to block the oil way to keep full oil pressure and now there is no shaft there.

    shows bearing been put back

    the rods and idler shafts.

My old engine blew up on 3 weeks ago now, the exhaust cam bolt cam lose and stopped spinning while the engine carried on moving so it went bang.
while my new engine was only bit of new parts everywhere, so i had to remove the engine in the evening, build my new engine and refit it and get it all working in 2 days, did not have much sleep.
But anyway I finished my new engine and got it fitted
    Engine removed

    both old and new

So far I have done 1000 miles and the difference is so much better i have more power and a lot more pull for it.
It's made the exhaust quiter and the over all power is better
    The final build was
Z22yh pistons and rods (runs higher compression and stronger)
the standard compression is about 10:1 im now running 12:1 (maybe higher)
    Ported and polished head
    Ported and polished tb
    Balancer shaft removal
    Balanced crank and knife edged
    Lightweight & balanced flywheel.
    2.4 inlet manifold
    Full stainless steel exhaust
    Piper cams
    large intake pipe
And just loads of new bits from piston rings to main & big end bearings, head rebuilt new gaskets, water pump, timing chains the list just goes on.

What's wrong with the casting? I thought that type of finish was designed to improve combustion?

there were edges/lips inside of the ports about 0.5mm big and just a poor finish, cleaning it up helps in a the air and fuel moving more free.

Got ya, I thought you meant the dimpled finish of the combustion chambers.

and am i right in saying the z22se had different cast heads,i think there were three factories, one in india, one in usa and in uk which produced varying finishes ie the ploystering look internally
