    Help please

Right for maybe 3 months my Vauxhall astra 1.8 (year 2000) has been cutting out power (as if it had stalled) while driving it usually when you slow down in lower gear to press the clutch down to change gears and had been gradually getting worse until on friday (29/01/11) I was driving it and the car cut out maybe 5-6 times within 5 minutes and it was quite a struggle to keep the car on without cutting out, which meant constantly having to rev the engine if i was about to stop. I also noticed there was a bit of power loss when driving it when this happened. I eventually got it onto my drive way and got out the car and it sounded like the car was panting trying to keep itself on. Since then I havent driven it.

Its probably worth mentioning that if I drove the car at about 80mph on the motor way for more than 5 or so minutes the engine management light would come on and then as soon as I bring the speed down after 5 minutes it would turn off.

Im due to take it to a garage tomorrow or wednesday perhaps (when i can get the time off work) however was wandering if anyone knew if this was common in astra's and what the issue could possibly be?

PLEAAAASE REPLY IF YOU CAN HELP DIAGNOSE??

clean the throttle body and butterfly on the air intake 99% of the time its that. get some carb cleaner from halfords ect and take of the top of the intake (torx 30) i think and hold open the throttle and spray in and wipe round with you finger. do it til its clean. when it comes to starting it up youll have to give it full throttle and it will take a bit of time and when it starts it will run rough for a couple of secs but this should solve the problem.

thanks for the advice, my mate who's a mechanic thought perhaps its something to do with the air flow meter aswell, but that was based simply on the description I gave to you guys..

"slnab" when you say it'll run rough you mean generally every time i start it up or just the first time after i do it?

It'll run rough and louder for the first 50miles or so and then it'll be back to normal.
