    Mk4 1.6 sxi Won't start

    Hi Guys,

I Just sold my old VR6 Golf for something a little more economical yet still sporty. Got myself a mk4 1999 1.6 16v sxi in white. I bought it as a non runner as I'm low on the cash front to fix it up and put it back on the road.

So far I've had no joy. I've checked the spark plugs and they all work fine. There is also plenty of fuel on the sparks when I pull them out so I know there is fuel and I know there is a spark. Also if I pop it into gear and turn the engine, it will move forward and backwards so its engaging. However it wont start .

There is a engine management light is on when I start it (or at least try). I know it could be the key but I haven't got a second one to try. The central locking works fine from the key fob so I don't think its that but if someone had some conformation on checking whether its the key without me having to buy a new one, that would be great?

Other than that I'm guessing there are a few sensors I need to check are in working order? Any advice on that would be great as I'm feeling a bit stumped!

    Thanks
    Henry

After some more investigating this morning, I've found that there is no difference between having the chip in the key taken out of the key so I'm guessing it is the immobiliser.

Does anyone know a sure fire way of testing this other than buying a new chip? Sadly I only got one set of keys with the car.

you say there is an engine management light on, search on here for the "pedal test"
hopefully someone else will be able to help you with the immobiliser side

Hi, thanks for idea, unfortunately I tried the pedal test and nothing happened. Quick google search says its z series engines only which is '01 onwards so no joy

Anyone any help on immobiliser problems?

    You need the paperclip test:

I am guessing at crank position sensor...

    Hi,

    Thanks for advice.

I got a lot of codes I don't really understand!

    They were

    93101 61210 610610 335 (crank) 101105 103410 1613 91310 1611 10697 10325.

I'm rather confused even after looking at the topbuzz site. I got the 335 one though being crank sensor. Took it off and gave a clean but no joy. Looking into getting a new one to make sure at the moment. Does anyone recognise any of the other codes or have I wrote them down plain wrong?

    Thanks

Ok had another go. Heres what I got using topbuzz

0130 - Head gasket oxygen sensor.
    0335 - Crank sensor.
    0105 - Intake manifold sensor.
    0340 - Camshaft sensor.
1612 - Quick research says battery. Which is flat from trying to start so thats fine. I've got it wired to our Yaris when starting so thats fine.
0607 - Quick search says Knock sensor from lack of oil. Thats probably the engine not starting so oil not getting round so not too worried at the moment.

So I'm going to check and clean and change some off these sensors in hope it will live!

Any advice on the above would be grand

    Thanks

by looks of that u could do with 4 sensors ??? BUT some might be old codes ive got same car as u . and i had a few codes show up on tech 2 thingy when cleared they were all old and my car just needed purge/carbon changing and hey presto sorted its under d side wheel arch plastic near indicator its a black box to see if its that just behind airfilter box theres 2 pipes dissconect them and try starting your car if car starts youll need to replace purge valve and carbon canister as steve 1412 told me today . mine took a few goes to start
