What age is the car? how much does the owner want for it? find out if the cambelt has been done, should have been done on age by now but if not its close on mileage. Check for oil leaks, check for smoke on start up and under acceleration..... Im sure there is more and more knowledgeable people will help you as well.

    smoke on idle/boost
check turbo spools correctly and no excessive smoke out the back
check service history (cambelt, oil changes)
Mileage can be altered stupidly easy, check old mot's to verify
Rocker cover gaskets are bad, check for leaks
Do pedal test to see if any codes are present

Apart from that, reliable engines if looked after. I love mine
