flat battery / alternator light after the event

05 astra van 17.td. mk4 even tho mk4 supposed to of ended 2004!?
i came to my van this morning completely flat battery.
got jump leads on it and clearly the battery was very flat as even with jump leads the starter motor would barely turn over the engine.
while realising the dead battery was pulling the voltage down of the jump battery i decided to leave it connected for a couple of minutes for the dead battery to soak up some ooommpph. mean while in the engine bay i could hear something i can only describe as a airoplane engine starting ever building up speed (rotary sound) which eventually stopped emitting a sound after seemingly reaching its high speed happy point! ??? (it wasn't the sound you get from the idle control valve)
anyway a second battery and a charge and start was needed to get it running. however after it run the dash displayed all manner of i'm not happy electrics with rev counter flicking up and down abs and eml on etc
no clock. moved it on to the drive and also noticed no power steering!
i just put it down to the low voltage and was sure it would come good.
after ticking over for some time all elecs seemed ok. turned it off and then back on it started under its own steam. dash/elecs were ok bar eml!
went for a 20min drive to get some poke shoved into the battery. got back and tried several starts to see if eml would go out but no.
so decided to disconnect battery to force reset. but now reconnected eml and battery light! wtf. no charge going to battery (tested) . this would explain the flat battery this morning but i previously had no alternator light!
is the eml fault got any link to alternator? never seen alternator monitored by ecu?
can i flash out the codes?
looks a right pig to change with that piggy back power steering pump on it! ?

right several starts and battery disconnects later eml is out.
just battery light and no power steering
almost bought a battery before i had any indication of non charging too !
£125 quoted for alt. and fun in the garage for a few hours no doubt
ticks over at 1100rpm too as the battery drains prob normal aswel as the clutch not engaged to spin the PS pump which would add some load

turns out the piggy back pump is the oil pump or some sort of scavenge?
Just as a follow up. was the alternator.
i struggled a little to find a pic of how the bracket is attached to the block.
so took some so you can see for future reference.
for me i released the alternator from the brackt but then the bracket was in the way to get it out. so then bracket off and out presto
