    Astra G front suspension,

    Hi There,

I've got an astra G on a 03 plate, I'm getting a really bad noise coming from the front suspension, it's a noisy rubbing/clonking sound. the funning thing is I've heard it on other astras the same shape so I wanted to know if it's a common problem.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

    Thanks Steve,

    What is a ARB droplink?

Would you know if this is a big fix or something I could do myself?

Also is there a way of checking for sure.

    Many thanks.

I had the same problem. The front suspension made a clunking / knocking noise when driving over uneven surfaces. I asked at the mot it could be ARB bushes and the guy said he could not find anything worn. I figured that it would be difficult to check the ARB droplinks without taking off the wheels. So I ordered a new pair, about £22-£23 posted, and changed them this weekend.
Sure enough the old ones were shot to bits on both sides. The front is now nice and quiet over bumps and feels much better.

Changing them is easy enough, but the nuts might be a bit tight. You need an 18mm socket for the nut and a 19mm open ended spanner for the other side to stop the bolt turning. Access to the lowerfitting is a bit difficult and I found an 18mm ratchet spanner the only way I could get to the nut. There will be some tension on the ARB, droplink and suspension strut so I found jacking up the wishbone to relieve the tension was the easiest way to get the old link out and the new one in.

Less than £10 each on Trade Club from Vauxhall, buy the MK5 ones, a few quid cheaper and exactly the same fit
