    Is this what I need?

    Hey.

Need to switch a few lights off and clear some codes on the Astra and my Vectra.

    Will this do the job?

    Its mainly for the Veccy.

The Astra is a 1999 DTi, the veccy is a 2000 1.8 SXi (petrol)

definitely wont work on the Astra for 2 reasons

1999 is still OBD1 , OBD2 didnt come into play on the Vauxhall scene until 2000/2001

diesels werent OBD2 compliant until 2004

    So that defo wont work!

Vectra "may" work if its a late Z series engine (Z18XE) - ie the OBD2 range from 2000 onwards

If its the old X series engine (ie big block X18XE or small block X18XE1) then its only OBD1 and will not work

Easy way to tell on the Vec is the location of the cat - if its on the manifold its the later Z18XE engine and it will work

If the cat is underslung on the front pipe underneath the car then its the X series (OBD1) and will not work!

Your best solution is opcom software providing u have access to a laptop - comes in at about £30-40 on ebay and will work on all OBD1 & OBD2 models as well as the recent CANbus models.

In the meantime however, your best option is the paperclip test on the Astra, and the same for the Vectra if its the X series engine, failing that the pedal test will suffice on the Vectra if its the Z18XE

Then unplug the 2 big plugs on the main ECU for half hour in each case and the codes "should" be wiped....... unless of course we're talking Airbag lights etc.

    HTH

EDIT: although the listing says it will work on some pre 2000 I would be very sceptical, for that price you tend to find most OBD stuff only caters for the common OBD2 market....

may be worth a punt but personally id go for the tried n tested opcom if the paperclip/pedal test is not sufficient

Well I was advised to get a tech2 system, as that can reset the on-board computer for the mpg etc.

Does the Opcom system do the same?

tech2 is what Vauxhall use and that comes in at about £2K+

a lot of cheap crap on ebay claims to be Tech2 but its nowhere near

Opcom does pretty much anything the home mechanic can need and so much more - virtually does most things that dealers do with the official Tech2 gear

when u say "reset the obc for the mpg" then surely you can just press reset on the stalk when u refuel ??

youll have to explain in more detail what you need and we can establish what software u need.....

There a MID which reads your MPG and average speed etc. Mainly in the Vectra. I'm changing mine from a TID to a MID. A TID is where it shows clock and outside temp.

I was told it's from a 2.0 petrol, and as mine is a 1.8 I'd need it to be reset with a tech2 module.

Plus, the vectra being new to me, I want to read fault codes as they appare, and not pay £40 everytime.

in that case you will need the genuine article TECH2 at Vauxhall dealer

opcom "may" do it but not had the chance to play with this myself yet

apart from that, I dont know of any othe diagnostics that will do it - there may be others but youll probs struggle to find anyone with knowledge whereas thousands of ppl on here use opcom.

Hopefully sum1 can confirm if opcom can programme this

is the MFD fitted in the vec? and its not working without programming?

if no answer on here might be worth asking on VVOC
