Exclamation Spanner light stays on for 5 minutes

Hi there, it's my first time on so please be gentle!

My Mrs has the 1.9 cdti 150 XP. The egr valve was replaced 6 months ago & car serviced 4 months ago. The spanner warning light stays lit for up to 5 minutes when started from cold then goes off & the max mpg we've had is 38 combined. Any ideas?

Also, during the really cold weather, there's been a fairly loud knocking for a second or two low down in the engine when started from cold?

    Thanks in advance
    Scott

Glow plug fault? I think the plugs stay 'on' for a few minutes after starting to help combustion hence why the code clears after 5 mins or so. This may be why the engine knocks more initially when the engine is very cold.

    Just a thought.

Had the same issue mate, light had been on for months and months. Only came on at start up from cold then went away after a few mins on the road. It was only just recently with all this cold weather that it started causing issues. It would take three or four turns to get the car started every morning after it coughed and wheezed like hell.

My dads mate does all my services and MOT's. Told him about it when he MOT'd and serviced it in December, he checked it on diagnostics and it confirmed it was Glow Plug related. He couldn't tell me whether it would be plugs themselves or the relay.

I got a set of plugs from fleabay for £25 and changed them just last night. Ten minute job, piss easy (whether you are mechanically minded or not) Due to the car being warmed up i had no way of telling if the issue was resolved until this morning.

So the moment of truth arrived, 0528hrs, -7.5*C.......

Key in, first turn, no wheezing, fired into life, no EML (spanner light) anymore

    PROBLEM SOLVED
