difference between a/c radiator and normal radiator? astra mk4

    Hi,
just a fast question, buying a project astra g shortly with the rad gone in it, now i need to drive it back so im gona bring 1 with me to fit on the day when buying the car. I'm just wonding what is the difference between an air-con radiator and an average rad as the owner is not sure which 1 is fitted and im only going to be able to bring 1 version with me. E.g if it turns out that the car does have air-con and I bring a normal radiator with me will I still be able to fit it and run the car?? Thanks for yer help

You dont need the aircon rad for the car to run. So if it wont run it must be the normal rad.

    Normal rad is for water

Thanks for your reply, so if I bring a normal rad with me it will cover me for either situation?

Aircon radiator ( or condensor as its properly known ) doesn't use coolant like the engine. It has its own refrigerant.

A normal rad isn't compatible with the aircon if thats what you are asking.

my aircon rad developed a leak, so i replaced it with a normal radiator and cable tied the aircon unit to it and the aircon is working fine, so it shouldnt be a problem, just need to cable tie a few areas as the non-aircon rad is slightly smaller!

    Never in a million years.

The Air Con Condenser has air tight fittings specific to the pressure the Air con system runs.

The Coolant radiator has an inlet and and outlet for hoses (i.e. big round holes)

So there's zero chance a coolant radiator can be used in the aircon system.

Also the AirCon Condenser is slightly smaller than the Coolant radiator.

    Just for info.

The Aircon rad is the new item in this picture and is bolted to fixings on the Coolant Rad

maybe i worded myself wrong lol! from what the other guy has said and looking at the pic, it was the silver rad (the coolant one) that developed the leak, and i cable tied the black bit (air con part?) to the silver one and all is good.

anyway you've solved it so irrelevant post complete

Nearly. That'll be why your post doesn't make sense. Not quite got the bits right.

The Coolant radiator is behind the silver (new) radiator (which is a new Air Con condenser)

If the silver rad that developed a leak, you'd not now about it by looking at it as it's filled with gas. Any coolant leak would be from the coolant radiator.
