Advice on aux belt X20DTL engine

Hi, I've got a very noisy aux belt on my Astra, after inspection I realized it seems fairly loose. The car has done 169,000 plus miles now.

-the belt has done 19,700k miles, it was a "non original", meaning.. I bought it from a local motor factors shop.

-I had it fitted by a mechanic and within a couple of months it began to make a high pitch noise, but lately is has gotten much worse.

the engine is an X20DTL, 2 liter turbo diesel according to the car's docs, I would appreciate advice as to what to do, whether to replace the belt or not, if it is possible to apply tension to it etc.

I remember the mechanic (Among other things) removed the engine support to replace it, is that correct?

Got some mechanical skills but not an expert, got a decent wrench set.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

I remember looking up some info about the aux belt on the X20DTL and saw that there is a tensioner that should automatically adjust belt tension.

True maybe the belt needs to be replaced, but maybe the tensioner is starting to screech needs to be replaced.

You could buy the tensioner and could install it yourself. I didn't see anything about the engine mount but I'll take another look at the install info.

    Cheers, Paul

Here's an example tensioner on eBay (aftermarket part I guess)
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Astra...item2eaf30474d

Maybe I'm missing something but info only says to remove lower engine compartment cover (not engine mount). I notice that it says that the "damper" (part farthest from the roller) must be stored in upright position, or it would need to be bled by compresing several times in upright position....

    Hi Paul,

    Thanks so much for helping

I have yet to identify where that belt tensioner is, when i looked earlier today..

looking from above the engine, removing air filter, manifolds etc..I could not identify the one, I could see four or five "rollers" the most similar was the one at the front of the engine behind the radiator..but not sure..

I need to know which one it is.. so will have a look tomorrow with daylight,

    thanks again Paul,

    José.

Happy to help. Email me and I could reply with a diagram if you like. Probably worth buying a Haynes manual though.

    Cheers, Paul

...the damper on the tensioner is covered with something like thick dark grease, it looks like it's had it, so I will be doing both, belt and tensioner I guess.

    Thanks guys!

Well spotted, interesting observation. Should be a simple fix then.

    Hello all...

I have a problem with the astra g X20DTL engine
I have to fit a new aux belt, it's very old, sure it has more than 60.000 km.

Haines manual says "the procedure requires the engine to be supported while removing the right hand engine mounting"

It says it can be done with a trolley jack and a piece of wood.

Ok no problem... but the question is, where i put the jack? surely not under the sump, so where??

thankyou in advance for any tips.

If it will be possible to remove the bel without removing the engine mounting i write here.

Tomorrow i go under the car to see.

    TY to all.
