    poss air lock

    Hi
    I own a 1.7 dti astra van,,
    It uses water,,crack in the rad
    Anyway i filled the tank up yesterday as it was empty
    Today on the water temp gauge it went to around the 80c mark,, normally hits 90c at temp,,
    Then it went to 0c
    The heater is fine,,
    I presume its got an air lock or thermastat
    If an air lock how can i get it out please

    I'm pretty sure these engines are self bleeding.

    You could top it up and run it with the cap off for a while.

    I have got it back upto around 80c
    Weird how it has always run at 90c for the last 6 yrs

    sounds like the thermostat is tuck open.

    If it were me I would change that rad, if you have been topping up with water only you are asking for a head gasket failure, it is only the chemicals in the antifreeze that stops harmful deposits from choaking up your water jackets and corroding the matting faces between the head and the block.
