Angry Engine Light stays on and engine sounds bad

    Urgent Help Required!
When I was driving my Vauhall Astra 1.4 life (new shape 05 reg) on the motorway today the engine management light came on and the engine was sounding really bad. I open the bonnet to see what was wrong but couldn't see anything. However the engine was shaking and it sounds terrible. Luckily I got towed home buy AA who said I should see the garage as it could be anything.
When I got home and started the car it was OK to start up but the engine light stays on and its drivable but the engine sounds really bad.
    Can anyone please help?

you need to do the pedal test to read the fault codes

have a search on here for details

could be anything from a dodgy plug to a faulty coil pack causing a misfire or something serious like a broken camshaft as commonly found on the Twinport models.

Could be something totally different though but thats why u need to read the fault codes

@GeordieBandit - The AA guy said the same thing he said it could be anything however he also mentioned and said it looked like the camshaft looks likely the problem but wasn't 100%.
By the way I like you so please dont f**k Off as the problem I have isn't solved.

@Southwestastra - My car had oil in as I checked it before I set off, my oil warning light or any other light didn't turn on except for the engine management light.

Thanks people for your concern and helping me out solve my major headache and a really bad nightmare.

I will let you know what happens when ever I take it to the garage (not looking forward to it) the wife can forget the sales.

before u take it to the garage - read the fault codes ur self

seeing as u have the mk5 then it should be straight forward

get in, press the brake and accelerator to the floor and keep it there until were finished.

insert key and turn to ignition so lights come on dash - DONT START the engine!

now theres 2 things that may happen here depending on model

the odometer display may show "ECN and there 5/6 digits"

make a note of this ECN code and any other subsequent codes

what we do is ignore the last 2 digits then the first 4 digits make up the fault code.

For instance 030456 would be *ignore 56* to leave 0304

0304 code refers to a misfire on cylinder number 4

If u tell us the codes we can tell u the cause!

If ECN codes dont flash up then the EML (engine management light) car/spanner light may start to flash a set sequence

what u need to do here is count the sequence of flashes and pauses

for instance the code i mentioned above 0304 would be

    0-3-0-4

    or 10-3-10-4

10 flashes, PAUSE, 3 flashes, PAUSE, 10 flashes, PAUSE

1-9 flashes = number 1-9 in the code
    10 flashes = number 0

It sounds confusing at first but get in give it a whirl and report back with your findings.

    Good luck!

I have two faults I think:
    1) 0300
    2) 0304

I pressed the accelerator and brake and turn the ignition on. The engine management light started to flash and it gaveme these two codes.
Can somebody please explain what it means?

    Thanks

These engines (Z14XEP) do suffer from camshaft issues, iirc the camshaft caps come loose it could be that.

If it's any help to you, I had a similar problem with another car I had. The problems sound the same as it aswell. Try a new coilpack. If its the seperate ones (One for each spark plug) they are around £30 each from the motor factors.

Then what you need to do is to take each coil pack out and try the new one in its place. Repeat this until you find the one that is faulty.
