    car frozen

My car is frozen, there is a little ice in the water tank and the large pipe at the bottom right of the engine is filled with slush, i can press it and can feel the ice, it's not solid ice, just like slush..

My car will start but i was wary of driving it? can i leave it running for a while to see if it melts? i put some anti freeze in but there was still some water in there so i guess it hasn't helped.

the water tank has also swelled up to the top almost so i'll need to drain it out.

classic case of not enough anti-freeze in the car.

you could start it but could cause all sorts of problems, mind its not just the pipes it will be in the engine block as well.

all you'll need to do it wait for it to thaw or place the car in a garage with a heat.

I would be more concered if the frozen water has expanded and pushed the core plugs out of the engine block......it sounds like you did not have enough anti-freeze in the coolant system to protect from the freezing weather conditions.......you maybe lucky as it's only slush but I would drain down and add new anti freeze.

I forgot to mention, there is a long laborious processes you can do if you really want it to start running.

Start by heating up the pipes and radiator with some sort of heating device something like a hairdryer, but be careful not to blast it with too much heat straight away.

drain the fluid out the car as it starts to melt, keep topping up the water level with anti-freeze until all the water is starting to flush through.

Once fairly happy with the water moving more freely, flush system again and add water and anti-freeze to the correct mixture then allow it to sit of about an hour.

after this you can be confident to start the car without frozen water.

only do this if you really really need the car to go, as its costly, time consuming, and you probably would be doing it in the cold as well.

thanks for the replies i think i have started to melt it as the slushy feeling is starting to go but how do i drain it? the water tank is almost full obviously where the ice has expanded causing the non frozen water to rise

so i cant put anything in until it's down.
