    Broadband and gaming (console PS3)

what do I need to get the best from my broadband for gaming?

Is it best to have it hard wired rather than wireless?
Can you have more than one router for one connection in the house?

this is my current speed and its driving me mad today!

what part of the result above is important for gaming?

Does gaming come into the fair usage policies in any way?

Gen me up folks, because its seriously upsetting my black ops

Think the ping is relevant for online gaming. and usually hard wired can be better, but i have my ps3 wireless and never had an issue, as long as your isp and signal are tip top

With black ops it's a bitch because it's hard to tell if it's your hardware/signal or the servers but all weekend it's been laggy as hell and for me totally unplayable a lot of the time. I get lost connection messages constantly and it takes 2 or 3 attempts to get in a lobby then it's about 3 out 6 games will actually start and play!

    Driving me mad!

I think it may just be the servers Matt.

I have a 10mb virgin BB and never have troubles with the PS3 online, but last night I couldnt get a decent game in due to timeouts, loss of connection etc.

But then I decided to rent a movie online (over the ps3) from lovefilm and that ran fine.

First tip - get it hard wired.....
I dont care what anyone says, wire vs air is a much better connection.

At least that will also tell yo wether it's your connection or not.

There are many tips on setting up your connection, to ake the most of whats there.
As I dont online game as serious as you, I cannot advise exactly what nees sorted.

...but maybe it's time to challenge you with a crap conneciton !!! lmao

That connection should be fine. I would say your problem is the wireless.

Agree the black ops servers are guilty of this. constantly losing connection and lagging, but playing gt5 or fifa with no issues. and i am on the highest sky package offered.

Upload and ping are important, but 41ms shouldn't be an issue. Upload should be ok as it is as well.

You can't have more than one router, but you could have a wireless booster if you have signal strength issues. Basically just receives the wireless signal, then re-transmits it.

Wired is always better than wireless, but TBH unless you have a poor wireless strength the difference on a 2mb connection will be negligible.

Have you tried playing a different game to see if it is black ops specifically? There has been absolutely loads of criticism hurled at black ops online on the ps3. Many people claim they can only manage to get into maybe 3 out of 10 games they try, and only a couple of those play right through to the end.

I think black ops works a bit diff to how mw2 did. If you're the host then you lag like hell. The person who is host often leaves because of that, then the process is repeated with the guy who is picked as next host, until the game just craps out.

Check out the user reviews of it on amazon.

Wired is better than wireless, Its direct. When I play at my house I have it wired. Black Ops is a Joke and i'm seriously considering asking for my money back due to the poor connection and constant getting kicked out of games. Example, me and two other mates take in turns to go round each others houses with our ps3's join each other and then try and get into a game.. then all of a sudden one is kicked! How? We are all on the same internet connection which in some cases is 50mb virgin, 10 mb virgin and 4mb sky!
Or two people at one house one at another, the other matey gets kicked. The online gameplay is so infuriating!!!!! Also how can a stab be quicker than 10 bullet penetrations? The game just does not make sense and its about time we asked for our money back until the bloody issues are sorted with it!
