    Astra Est 1.7TD running 'lumpy'

    Hi all,

I have owned this car for about 4 months and it has been running fine, but recently while ticking over at around 7-800 rpm its like sitting in a paint mixer! She has 204k miles on the clock with fsh and reciepts of belt changes etc. She also smokes every time she starts and when I put my foot down, but when cruising there is very little smoke, if any!

Any help in these issues would be appreciated.

    Cheers, Mike

    Hi Mike,

Info I have suggests that the only 1.7L diesel for 1999 was the X17DTL, but that could be wrong, could be the Y17DT (supposedly starting in year 2000, but that could also be wrong). Could you tell us which it is?

Anyway, regardless of which engine it is, is the EML showing on your dashboard? If so I reckon it would be worth getting your codes read or buying an op-com or similar unit to read your own. Don't need one for my old MK3, but I would buy a code reader if I had an MK4 diesel.

    Cheers, Paul

    Hi Paul,

May be a daft question but how would I tell which engine it is? The EML has been flickering on and off lately, after having it plugged in a message around the line of 'critical system malfunction' was reported. The mechanic and everyone he spoke to have never heard of this message! As there was no area specified in the message it was hard to diagnose what the fault was. The code was cleared over a week ago

The light came back on for around a minute on Friday also and it seemed as if the car was running on reduced power. It then went off and returned to full power???

I know basic mechanics, but when it comes to stuff like this i'm

    Cheers

Hi Mike, Here's a pic of my MK3 X17DTL. The MK4 X17DTL looks much the same.

Did you get the fault code?

OK you have the 1999 Astra G (MK4) X17DTL. I know I've seen that message before - I'll check around and see if I can find it. Somebody else on here may have a know or have a suggestion...

saw a couple of references just now to the basic P0400 EGR system fault code but also quoting "critical system malfunction".

Maybe the code was just a type of P0400 code, but surely they would have mentioned EGR system. On that engine there is a solenoid valve to consider as well as the actual EGR valve...
