Angry exhaust , cat or sensor help needed.

my car has a stainless steel race pipe and hand made stainless steel back box fitted.
it has been fine on my car for a year and a half now.
a month ago i had a prodrive rear bumper fitted so ment the rear box had to be shortened and pipework bent a bit on back and the tail pipe moved a bit and re welded in the centre to clear trough the rear spliter.
it has been fine till this morning , on the way to work the exhaust emissions light started to flash and the car felt like it was missing and lack of power and the back box sounded like it does when u get a blown one.
got out of the car and the exhaust was puffing.
reved it a few times and it went and ran ok on way home.
took it to place who made the system and he said it was the cat that was on its way out and nothing wrong with there work.
the cat is only 9 mouths old and was brand new.
on way back to work it was
    running and sounding fine.
on way home the lights flashing again and lack off power and all the other problems from before.
    its a 1.6 sri on a 2002 plate.
anybody have a ideal for wat it is.
as cat people say its the exhaust n exhaust people say its the cat.

This could be quite a few things TBH
o2 sensor, coil pack (not unusual), air flow meter
its hard to say, best bet is find someone local who has a tech 2 or opcom and see what it says.

if you've got a fault reader it will fit into the plug which is located under the plastic tray underneath the handbrake. It will come up with a number and you cross reference that number with what it says in the manual to find out what it is. Is it smoking at all out the exhaust?
