excellent site for cheap laptops would be....

    http://www.cheap-it.com/

refurbed ex display and many more, some come with smal harddrives but if you by them cheap an install a new one it still works out alot cheaper.

you just need to put in your price range and it will bring up a list of laptops.

Avoid netbooks, they are cheap but there's a reason why they are cheap

    Brands to look out for:
    Dell
    MESH
    HP
    Packard Bell

    Brands to Avoid:
    Acer
    Advent

I would have a look on the dell website though (dell.co.uk) and see what you can find on there, they usually have base models starting from £250, so with the spare cash if your wanting to spend full £300 you can add bits yourself using customisation feature of the website.

Working with computers I would say in the above post there are ones to look out for and avoid also

Dell is the top computer I get in for repair, followed by HP and packard bell.

agree on avoiding advent, pc world own brand shite!

Some acer ones are bad, sony vaio can be awkward for parts because they want everything to go through their sony vaio repair centres ..... even if you did want to repair your own laptop you would be hard pushed to find a service manual as Sony do not release them.

I like Toshiba, parts are easy to get hold of and are not rip off prices! .... dont get a load of Toshiba in for repair.

Dell wanted recently £55 for a LCD cable and was told it was a rare part (of course on a 2009 laptop!!!), rip off on spare parts if you go direct

Good luck, do some research on the model you want and look at it first before buying ..... you will find a story to tell on most laptops if you do a google search.

Toshiba's i agree are a decent brand, however their latest models are quite bulky and cheap looking, especially in your price range. Same goes for Packard Bells, however i have never had any trouble with packard bells.

Also need to look at the figures here as Dell are the UK's top selling computer retailer.

Also brand i missed was IBM, very, very good brand. Hard waring, and again like dell are used by thousands of companies world wide because of their qualities.

Theres a company called Viper-IT who operate on Ebay who i have bought laptops off on a number of occasions, they do really good deals on reconditioned units, probably worth a look

agree there but does not mean they are the best, they do some big tv campaigns + others.

If I am honest I dont like em but that is just personal opinion based through my repairs

as said the budget will not get you anything too speccy but something ok

I am not associated with this company but might be worth a look, have no experience of them either
