you want a 50% water and 50% antifreeze mix for winter, flush the system if the antifreeze is old. use red antifreeze if that is what is already in the system or blue if that is in the system. red is from vauxhall at around £15 on trade or similar price for blue from halfrauds

I just bought 3 litres of Vaux's red/pink GM Anti-Freeze and it cost me £10.80 on trade, just done a 50/50 mix with water, sufficient to temperatures down to -38!!

I take it you have a MK4 going by your username! Theres a little red tap on the bottom left corner of the radiator if you look at it from the front, drain in there. Then flush through with a hosepipe, then make a device to connect the hosepipe at the bottom of the radiator and flush back the other way. Then I always start the car up with the whole cooling system full up with just water, get it up to temperature (80ish degrees) then drain this again, then do the final fill, adding 1 litre of coolant and then 1 litre of water etc etc. Then start the car with the cap off the header tank but make sure your heaters are on full, do this for a minute or 2 and that will get rid of any air locks. Re-fill if nesasary and keep an eye on it over the next week as it may still drop again.

Top man, yea I do have a mk4 lol just thought it would be best to make sure I got the right level in! Plus when I looked at it the water seemed really dirty so don't think it's been changed in a while, I'll sort it out tomorrow is Valdosta antifreeze ok to put in?

Can't comment as never used it, antifreeze from Vauxhall is cheap enough, I didn't even use a full 3 litres.

How do you get the red tap off? Not to sure if there's some nifty technique as I don't fancy breaking it. Cheers for any help

You don't need to take it off, it unscrews, if it's stiff use some mole grips or pliers.
