    Idle issue!? Help

Mk4 Turbo running EDS Phase 3.

Car has started to have issues when on idle. This is intermittent, but regular enough that it happens everytime i drive the car.

When ticking over on idle, it appears to have moments where it struggles to maintain rpm, in that the revs drop and it stalls, or it picks itself back up. The same happens when approaching junctions. I put the clutch in and the car almost/does stall.

My first area to check was all of the air hoses, and nothing appears to have split/come lose.

My only thought is the dumpvalve, which is a Collins. Boost gauge reads the desired boost, and the dumpvalve makes the necessary noise!

Coilpack changed recently for a new one.

    Any comments/advice appreciated.

Luke, to me this sounds AFM related.... I know you had issues with your AFM before which I know you got sorted. The symptoms you have described points me to that.... However if your dumpvalve is sticking open, this can generate the same effects..

IMO, work from cheapest to most expensive.

Things you could try, before paying decent money on new parts...

    Clean TB,
    Earthing mod,
    New spark plugs,
Swapping AFM with someone for a week or so.

I did the following at the weekend, but to no avail:

    1) Cleaned the throttle body, top and bottom.
    2) Removed sparkplugs and cleaned.
    3) Fitted new fuel filter.
    4) Checked all hoses for leaks.

I haven't done the earth-mod, so may well try this at the weekend. However, as Shaun has quite rightly stated, i have had this issue before. Luckily i had my old Bailey's DV when it happened the first time, and refitted this in place of the Collins, but had no difference.

I'm running the 1.9 airbox with a panel filter, so the problem of heat-sock through a cone-filter can be ruled out.

The more i think about it, the more i'm leaning towards the AFM being the problem. As when i switch the Phase 3 map on, i have had overboost issues where it can spike to 24psi, then drops back to 18psi.

If it is the AFM, then i'm not sure what to do, as my intention is to fit the VXR AFM as part of a EDS3.5 upgrade in the near future. Problem is finances at the mo!

    Hi Luke,

You're more than welcome to take a drive to my house and try my AFM, Map sensor, Dump valve and anything else you want as my car sits in the garage most of the time.

If I disconnect the afm, does it go into 'limp' mode? Will it drive normally?

Minty: many thanks, will let you know. Shaun has kindly offered to lend me an AFM, so will see what happens.

No worries mate, i think the car uses a default value for the AFM reading when disconnected but it will still run. I had to disconnect mine when my boost hose kept popping off because when its connected and the boost hose came off the car kept stalling and cutting out. When disconnected i was able to drive a little to find a place to re-fit the hose.

So in theory if the AFM was at fault disconnecting it would temporarily eliminate the dropping in revs and engine cutting out etc.
