Torque Android app, bluetooth reader *update*

For Information only, and i appreciate this is not going to be as good as tech-2 or the like, however it works for the novice

A few weeks ago, i was asking about an Android App called torque, and the use of the bluetooth dongle for the car to read/clear ecu codes.

Well i took the plunge and bought it all

    Ebay: Bluetooth ELM327 OBDII reader
    Android Market: Torque app £3

Here's what the app interface looks like

    Main screen

    Other random screen

The data hasnt been populated yet because i haven't been out in the car, however it uses engine displacement and weight to gather rough data about BHP and stuff like that. I dare say it wont be very accurate.

I plugged the bluetooth dongle into my car, paired it with my HTC Desire, opened the app and it started displaying info. I was able to read codes (there was none) and if so clear them too. It was handy for me because i thought my engine coolant sensor was knackered, however the readings i got from this helped, as i could create a custom dial to monitor it.

    Bluetooth Dongle
It only seems to work with an OBDII ELM327 dongle, and i bought this one from ebay (Item number: 220678938329) It took about a week and a half to come, however its that you need.

If needed i can shimmy a few screenies when its running, its no problem. Gives me an excuse to go a drive later to get some proper readings.

I rooted my desire to get screenshots to work in case anybody asks

The app and everything should work, i only rooted my phone to get the screen shots to work.

Here some screens, however it was very difficult to shake the phone (screenshot activation) and drive at the same time lol

You can see the red arrows where the dial hit the highest point.

This one is when you are stationary, it thinks you want to do a 0-60 time lol. Max power was 70.1bhp but it felt faster lol

In Summary, i think that app is useful for reading codes as a quick identifier for further investigation, and until i have a real good tinker with it i wont know if its worth recommending.

    Annoyances so far

Attaching my phone cradle to a cold screen lol
always having to pair the devices
Not really knowing what the hell i want to monitor (lots of custom options)
You need to have GPS turned on, so having a car charger is a good plan

    Good points
Peace of mind knowing theres nothing really wrong under the hood
you can create custom screens for what you want to monitor and in what style, graph, digital or dial.

In essence it a use once, and put away until you feel the car isnt right. for instance

The other night i did a 65 mile round trip to Luss and the car suddenly felt rubbish, so i stopped hooked up the thing and sat for a bit looking at everything. Drove away again with a clear head. It was probably more the drivers fault lol
