    Z20LET Rebuild

hi guys thinking about gettin a z20let which needs a rebuild. what price am i looking to rebuild the engine? and what parts are needed to do it.

the head will cost me approx £150 to get it all reskimmed etc. but its the bottom end i dont know much about getting rebuit. what would i need -

    pistons rings
    shells
    big end bearings
    little end bearings

the extent of my knowledge on bottom ends end about there.

was also thinking of gettin a 2nd hand set of leh pistons and some forged rods and make a semi forged engine so i can take the engine up to 350bhp.

    Any Help Greatly Appreciated.

    Thanks

really? i didnt think they where rated for that much? is it the rods that are the weak point in the leh engine then? is it advisable to get the underpiston spray bars fitted in?

yes i wud get oil jets mate, i no few guys ruuning to 380bhp with oe pistons, the pistons and rods aint great in let so do both but a good set of vxr pistons will easy take 370bhp to 400bhp ad say.

    taken from courtney sport website

In general terms, the Z20LEH does not require a piston upgrade when being tuned up to around 400bhp, but when going over 300bhp we recommend steel rods, especially where high torque figures are being produced. However we can off a full rebuild service on the Z20LEH engine if customers do require Coswroth pistons.

The Z20LET/Z20LEL and Z20LER engines require stronger pistons when exceeding 300 bhp so a full engine rebuild is generally required, along with steel rods

I had my Z16XE bottom end re-built, labour for recon then parts came to about £300 or so which included having the head skimmed. I had the bores re-honed, crank rotation faces polished and then new bearings/shells/piston rings throughout. Oil pump was checked and was fine so saved some there.

Labour to strip then rebuild is the expensive part - I luckily had a local-ish member offer to do mine for a very good price, but I'd expect you'd need to pay £300+ for this to be done professionally, if not more.

I had the valve stem seals replaced, valves re-lapped, brand new gaskets throughout, new valve lifters, water pump, cambelt kit etc, all in the engine rebuild plus labour and parts including oil, plugs etc. was about £1200.

Oil jets were fitted for the LEH pistons because it was designed to run very lean (and hence hot) at idle to pass emissions tests...

thanks for the help guys. i will save money on the stripping and rebulding on labour as my dad is a mechanic so he will be doing all that for me. but hes no specialist in to the zlet engine so i thought i would ask you guys to see what you think.

so the parts arent alot then? after speaking to courtenay they say that they wouldnt advise just re ringing pistons as they feel that when the block is rehoned and then new rings put in the engine could use alot of oil etc.

i dont know an awful lot in to this as said but i was thinking about gettin a set of 2nd hand vxr pistons getting them cleaned up and gettin new rings and buying a set of rods for the engine so then it is capable of handling 400bhp.

dont know if i am goin to go up to 400bhp as im not sure if i want to get a garret turbo as i may just get the vxr turbo i have put to stage 2 hybrid. or maybe buy a hybrid and sell my turbo as its only a month old.

courtenay also said that they have developed a con rod which doesnt need the oil spray jets and the rod is built to let oil through and spray it to the under side of the piston thus doing the same job as a oil spray jet does

Any engine rebuilder worth their salt would be able to tell you what work is needed for the pistons and bores. After 156,000 miles mine were almost as new so re-honing and rings were all that was needed.

So long as you bed the new rings in correctly I can't see why there should be an issue with oil loss. I think the place who did mine said they'd order suitably sized piston rings if I needed larger ones after the honing but if memory serves I didn't, original size was fine. The honing is only done so the rings can bed in and hardly touches the bore diameter if at all.

ahh thats ok then cause i thought surely just on a school mums z20let in her zafira if a piston ring goes she aint gunna replace all the pistons aswell is she. surely vx would just replace the ring :S

Depends what has been damaged...a blown piston ring can damage the bore and piston, so you'd possibly need all the bores re-drilled and honed which worst case may need new larger pistons in each, and new rings in each too.
