Astra Coupe Turbo Convertible Buying Advice

    Hi boys and girls

I will soon be buying myself an Astra Coupe Turbo Convertible and was wondering if I could rob you all of some of your advice.

I'm pretty clued up on the general things to look for when buying a car but I was wondering if there are any specific problems/issues to look for on these cars.

Also this will be my first turbo so any advice on what to look for in that department (turbo wear/damage etc) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time,

    Gav

check obviously service history, crash damage, get a hpi check, all the usual things

timing belts and water pumps are usually done before 60,000 make sure its been done if around this milage

also check if its running the origonal turbo because if it is then theres a chance it will go bang, if its been replaced, find out who changed it and when it was done

if its on its way out, itl have white smoke out the exhaust and wont be as responsive or work to what it should

    Thanks for the quick reply.

How much are replacement/rebuilt turbos? I may upgrade the turbo if it's more cost-effective than replacing with a standard one.

most people go for the LEH turbo from an astra vxr as a replacement for the LET turbo when it goes bang as it can take a bit more bhp over the standard turbo and its a direct fit

you can get them new for about £500 from vauxhall or about £350 ish from ebay

you can also have them reconditioned and uprated, ball bearings etc from the likes of turbo technics but i dont know how much this is

for the other question of if you can get a turbo for a z22se

i believe you can but it will cost about £5000 from Regal autosport

I think Tone has advised you well,

I might add that you should check to see if the roof operates well,

It is a common failure for the roof ecu to go faulty and they are hard to find a replacement, lol i'm after a working one.

Make sure the oil level is ok, as well,
A sure sighn if its low that the turbo is burning oil, go by the smell of burning/not burning oil.

Thank you Tone/Brian, very much appreciated.

£500 for a VXR turbo is less than I expected. Not sure what a standard turbo is but I assume it's a bit of a no-brainer to replace with the VXR item

    Thanks again

Good luck in finding a decent turbo cabby. I gave up and bought a 2.2. There are a few about so keep looking.
