    astra 1.7TD, (gm engine). dies

    Hi,
I have a 98' astra 1.7TD, (gm engine). While driving the other day, the engine cut out at around 50mph. I coasted to the side of the road, and tried restarting. engine turned over but would not start. I left it for about 5mins, then it started, but the rev counter was not working, and the idling was very rough.
The engine management light has been coming on of late, but goes off during acceleration.
Since the original engine cut out, sometimes it starts and runs fine, rev counter working, sometimes its as mentioned above.
It's cut out once more since with the same symptoms.
Anybody experience the same problems, or know whats causing it?
    All help greatly appreciated

Probably crank shaft sensor, if the engine revs rise and drop quickly whilst EM light is on then its almost certain.

£30 to £50, quickly replaced and tested. To prove it I started my engine whilst 'good' and disconnected sensor, which produced the same symptoms. Be careful.

HI Rich, thanks for the info.
It seems that the problem only arises when the engine warms up.
ie, car starts normally - runs well, revcounter works, then when the engine warms up, it cuts out. Then on restart, it idles roughly and the revcounter does not work????????????????
would that still be the Crankshaft sensor?

    cheers

Sounds a lot like my problem which is related to the crankshaft sensor, although my problem seems to lie in the ECU rather than the sensor/wiring.
Check the wiring to the sensor by disconnecting it, peeling back the rubber cover and checking resistance to ground of the grey/red and grey/black wires. My ECU has a short in it which means there is 0 resistance to ground on the grey/red and it produces exactly the same symptoms as yours.
I just got a new ECU I'm hoping to fit in the next week to check it out.
