    Accleration Whistle

    Car:
    Astra Mk4,
    1.8 engine.
    2002

Car had its front flexi pipe replace roughly 2 months ago, as previous one had slight crack in it. Since new part replaced whistle occurs at roughly 3000 rpm right through the revs till you change gear. Note this happens only on heavy acceralation (pedal more then 35/45% to the floor) and every gear, from 3000 revs onwards.

Took back to garage, and they said will be a faulty part, so they replaced the complete flexi pipe unit today FOC. Now the whistle noise is STILL occuring. The garage have looked at it and still be baffled why still happen (on a drive and on a ramp). the noise is from the front, and is not part of any air induction or from the top of the engine. It comes from around the flexi pipe area (they cant quiet locate it)

Noise never occured on the old flexi, only on new part.
Remember my engine is 1.8 and a NON turbo so shouldnt make any whistling noises lol!
Anyone shed on light? Garage could think maybe:
    Manifold
    Lambeda sensor not sealing correctly.

Dont want spend any labour/parts until locate the problem

    Thanks

I posted about this same problem on my 1.6 16v SXi to no delight.

Mines from around 3500rpm onwards gettin louder the higher the revs? I still wouldn't mind knowing what it is. But to be fair I've done almost 6000 miles like it and nothings majorly wrong (I hope)

    Hopefully someone replies to this.

Very similar to mine, but you can hear it from 3000 onwards. Havnt done that many miles like it, and is getting annoying.
If my car was a Turbo I wouldnt be to bothered... but is not and getting annoying!
No one on here can help then?

One can only guess without seeing the car properly, and the garage you took it too seem very competant.
However, i have known of a car with a very similar problem, and a new precat sorted the whistle which was at the time very obvious,
I presume your engine is the z18xe, as most xe engines have a cat converter which are very expensive new,
I wouldn't like to commit myself to say that is your problem for sure, but no doubt in time i think your symptoms will become more obvious,
    I hope i have helped a little.

    Thanks Brian

Not willing to shed out £100 or so for new Precat & manifold just yet. Have to remember that the whistle noise only occured AFTER the flexi pipe was installed. as there was slight leak on original. I am going to have few jobs on the car this week, taking front fog off, heat shield off.
Think of taking the lamba Sensor out, and plugging the gap and see if that isnt leaking.

One has got to think on the lines of an exhaust leak,

so try to illiminate the obvious,

It could be that in your flexi replacement a gasket seal has been displaced,

so try replacing some gaskets or seal them with gasket seal temporarily

dont think will be that Mark. Also happens when in neutral and revving the engine hard & fast at a stand still.

The Garage has done all this already. Having look this week, if I cant see problem I will send it back to them. Needs new wheel bearing by feel of it too

It appears the garage is very competant,
I can only think of what i had mentioned before, but this would be your last resort for obvious reasons.

In theory It could be that your flexi pipe was leaking initially and also at the manifold,
You cured the flexi leak and it created a more obvious leak at the mani , under pressure lol ie whistling is pressure
