A possible reason could be that you thrash the tits off it all the time

To be fair I was getting about 22mpg out of my old car which was a 1.6. My 2.0 Astra is returning on average 34mpg. The difference is the 1.6 had to work that bit harder which is probably where your fuel is going. I know it's hard with a small engine but try changing gear before 3000rpm and see what happens.

I think engine temp is fine (traffic jam halfway mark or bit over),yes doing short trips. don't have a heavy foot and don't drive rough.

70 from £10 thats bad i think. i get like 85-90 from £10 but i guess a derv is better but 202bhp tho i thought the 1.4 would get much better than that

but member its a heavy car and a small lump so will be harder on the mpg
    astra cdti 202bhp 323 lb-ft torque 45mpg
audi tt 180bhp and no lb-ft torque lol

hmm yeah i guess it does come down to the engine needing to work harder as its a small engine. probably going to get rid of it January or February and get a diesel mk5.
