    Ridiculous fuel economy

I'm SURE there's something wrong with how much fuel my car is using. It's an X16XEL (2000 1.6 16v SXI) and I do drive it a little heavy but I put 20 quid in 4 days ago and the fuel light came on (flashing) today. Did just shy of 100 miles (local).. surely something not right with that. I only get around 300 to a tank. I don't drive particularly conservatively but I don't nail it in first and second gear either.

Could it be running a bit rich? It often smells very strongly of petrol.

If it runs rich, I'd guess that one of your lambda (O2 Sensors) have failed, not sure which one it would be out of the two though. Better getting it on the computer to see if there are any DTC's

You shouldn't be smelling petrol, that suggests you might have a fuel leak?

There's no fuel leak, the petrol smell is coming from the exhaust. This is the first thing I checked! If that sort of range is normal then I guess I'll have to live with it, bloody annoying though since my mate's got a volvo V70 T5 (2.4 turbo) and the economy on that isn't much worse than mine

    £20 worth of petrol
    £1.26 a litre
    4.5 litres in a gallon
    35 miles to the gallon
    you do the maths

    ok, I'll do the maths.
    15.8 litres = 3.5 gallons
    = 122 miles driving like a fairy
