    <<< Astra Mk4 1.6 16v - smoke, oil, and shaking! >>>

    hi all,

My Astra Mk4 1.6 16v has pritty much packed in!!

BASIC PROBLEMS... ( drinking oil, white smoke out of exhaust, engine cutting out, engine shaking! )

Think my problems started few months ago when i ran out of petrol, and the only thing i had on me to fill up was a cleaned out 1L oil bottle! so thought would be fine... anyway got back to the car filled her up set off fine.. 2mins down the road there was white smoke pouring out my exhaust.. anyway filled her up with £45 of petrol to try thin it out, which it did after 3hours of reving the ***** out of it to clear it. seemed fine few days later it started to cut out, jerk around 40mph carried on for a few weeks as the garge couldnt find anything wrong and it past MOT! only thing was it seemed like it was burning alot of oil..

then last week, came to turn ignition on and smoke just piled out the back, my engine started shaking like hell, and would turn over but only if i keept my foot on the accelerator and as soon as i take it off it cuts out!

my first thought was headgasket or piston rings. but thers probebly a few more that i wouldnt know about as im only an amatuer.

cant aford to spend £600 odd on havin a garge fanny about with a new headgasket that might not even be the entire problem......

so decided to have a crack at it myself, and got a few mates who know what there doing and if i get stuck can call on them.

So basicaly im just asking you guys for a good head start on what plan of action i should take..

All help would be Massively appreciated!!!! =)

Id say coincidence but Head Gasket - is it using any water? (that would explain the white smoke) Check the smoke again - if its more grey/blue then its burning oil... either way it could still be HG.... Get a decent garage to do a sniff test on ur coolant - if there is any exhaust fumes in there then it will be HG mate..... Good luck.

The coolant levels have droped alot.. and ive just dis-conected the egr valve so i can keep it going without stalling by itself! - its changing from blueyy to grey! but there arnt any exhaust fumes etc.. in the coolant.

Any idea how i can fix the cutting out? or rekon it just needs a new EGR..?
so does this definatly mean my headgasket is foooked?

I'd also be inclined to think coincidence on the petrol in the oil container thing...

It does imply head gasket or possibly blown piston ring, but to be losing noticeable water and having white smoke does suggest head gasket or worst case cracked cylinder head.

well i sorted the cutting out problem! and found a liquid formula called K-Seal that you flush threw your system and it fills in the cracks etc like a glass. ran the engine threw for a few minutes and it seemed to work!

No smoke or anything and the engine ran great, used it for a day! and then yesterday came to start it in the afternoon and a bit of white smoke came out the exhaust and what seemed to be water driping out also!

then started it today and now theres just Really thick white smoke pilling out!
    any suggestions????

white smoke is more than likely to be head gasket gone.

i think that k-seal only works on contact with air.

Is the K seal not just like a "stop smoke" thing for worn rubber componants in the engine (piston ring seals etc?)

Id still say it sounds unfortunatly like HG failure mate
