    Melted piston help!

Picked up my mates new car yesterday and drove best part of 3 hrs to collect it,5k later and 2hrs into the journey home car was running fine then all of a sudden the car died under boost and lots of smoke etc came out of the back.

The first thought was head gasket failure after we plugged the computer in and had cylinder misfire come up, we have stripped the car down today and the piston on cylinder 1 is deformed and looks like it has melted??

The car is running 300bhp and has vxr turbo etc etc.

I want to know why this could of happened and what should we do now as i dont want to get it fixed up for him and the same happen again!

Also any advise on uprated parts recommended while its in so many pieces??

Melted piston is usually down to, running lean and not supplying enuff fuel or also intake temps getting to hot can cause this.

whats the full spec if you know of whats done to it?

cylinder 1 melting points to running to lean! if it had been cylinder 3 i might of said it was to high egt but not on cylinder 1 so much. which fmic is it?? also a car mapped to this spec should be run on 97-99ron fuel to stop/reduce pre ignition, detenation. this has also been known to melt pistons. when i had mine mapped i asked for it to be a little rich higher up the rev range to avoid this! a lean car will produce better higher bhp but in my opinion, the trade off isnt worth a melted engine. stage 2 with 300 bhp is a lot but if its really running lean then its possible with the results now coming to light! id put at least a set of vxr pistons in and have the lambda readings checked after the rebuild!!!
At the end of the day, it gets dark!!!!!

I would also say underfuelling. Fuel pump needing uprated to cope with the mods. is it on a standard pump?

not sure about fuel pump? will ave a look at that though.

this was the advert it doesnt say what cooler it is and i havent had chance to check it out yet

I will get a pic tommorow of what i can see with the head off, the piston rocks and has a 2mm gap on the inlet side of the piston where its deformed

im a bit unsure of the fuel pump causing it, there are enough folk on here running 300bhp on standard pump are there not? think i would be getting the injectors checked out before its rebuilt and checking it on a rolling road once its rebuilt to check the fueling

Just an issue to consider. could be pump, injectors, faulty sensor....as said will need live rolling readout when rebuilt to accurately identify what the issue actually is and when it becomes a problem (further up the revs or constant)

Opcom can give a basic live readout, maybe worth investing in one??

It isn't a Stage 2 Map running 300bhp but a 2 stage switchable boost at the flick of a switch.. Red.Dot don't map in stages..
