    Small car ideas

After 6 years it's time for the Smart to go, it's starting to break a lot and some extra seats would be useful. My girlfriend is shortly going to be starting a new job which means more travel and a decent reliable car is a must.

    The criteria is as follows:
-Budget is £7k max, ideally a little cheaper
-Ideally something around 2 years old so it has some warranty left
    -<30k miles
    -Not a Vauxhall
-No 1.0 engines, needs to be capable on the motorway
-No base models with wheel trims etc

So far I've seen quite a lot of 207's for good prices but I generally steer clear of French cars. The Suzuki swift seems like a good car for the money. Any recommendations?

Suzuki swift is nice, cheap to run and very reliable. Although i hope she hasn't got anything bigger than a handbag to carry in the boot. the space is non existant!

......and no i aint joking, shopping is a back seat job. I was looking at one but the lack of boot put me right off

fiesta 1.4 or 1.6 diesel....the missus has a 5 door Style 1.4 TDci company car....honestly its a brilliant car for cheap motoring...its not going to win any drag races with around 80bhp but its suprisingly quick, very very economical, good on the twisty stuff, pretty well equipped and bigger inside than you'd expect.....plus theres dealers everywhere
Mk5 Astra 150 SRi DTi 5 door with Exterior Pack in Lightning Silver with CRD2 on the way (hopefully!)

I like the Fiesta but the current model is still too pricey and the old model is too dated imo.

A few that have caught my eye so far:

    2008 Toyota Yaris 1300 cc 1.3 SR 5 Dr

    2008 Vauxhall Corsa 1200 cc 1.2i 16v Design 3dr

    2009 PEUGEOT 207 1.4 Verve

    2008 Mazda 2 1300 cc 1.3 TS2 3dr

    2008 Suzuki Swift 1500 cc 1.5 GLX 3 Dr

I'm trying to convince my other half that the Corsa is a decent car for the money. Think we need to get some test drives.

Didn't you stipulate in the first post that you didn't want a Vauxhall?

What sort of size are you actually looking for? There's a fair bit of difference between an iQ and a 207 for example. The 207 isn't far off the mk1 focus in terms of physical size - certainly much bigger than the Smart car you're replacing!

If you're looking at the smaller end of the market, how about..

Fiat 500 Abarth? 1.4 T-Jet is 160bhp so a lot of poke for your £, but are you looking for something cheaper to run/insure etc? nice cars nonetheless

    09 Plate, 8300 miles, £5k.

or if you don't mind compromising on the age side of things in order to get german engineering and design...

BMW 1 Series? buying from a garage will hopefully give you a warranty option, and they're cracking cars.

    54 plate, 1.6, 5dr, 37500 miles, £6479.

just a couple of different options for you there
    NOW - Sapphire Black 3dr Astra G

    THEN - Glacier White 2.0Di Estate - 136bhp 1.6 Pineapple Yellow Mk3 - Flame Red 2.0Di Van - Chianti Red 1.8 Coupe - Star Silver 2.2 Zafira - Flame Red 2.2 Linea Rossa Coupe - Titan Gold 1.8 Coupe

9 Years, 7 Astras, 1 Zafira, No Regrets.

My other half doesn't fancy a Corsa and hates the Mk5 Astra hence the 'no Vauxhalls'. I'm trying to convince her otherwise on the Corsa though.

As for size, I should have the said, City cars are out. Having had the smart car already she doesn't want another tiny car so no iQ, Aygo, 500 etc.
