cam chain - change it or not (Z22SE)

Basically I've got 2004 Astra with Z22SE engine. The car has done 42k miles.

Should I have the cam chain changed or I don't need to worry about it for another 40k? The engine sounds normal, no tapping/scrapping/rattling noise.

Paying 450 quid is a bit of expense. It may give some peace in mind though. However as fas as I know 04 reg cars were not affected by any mechanical faults as earlier cars. So maybe no need to do it.

For sure I'm going to change engine oil on Monday, I'll buy something decent like Castrol Edge 5W-30 (do I need 4 or 5 litres? I couldn't find any info in owners manual).

My dad says that I shouldn't bother with changing the cam chain. He drives Corsa with cam belt (he's 1st owner) with 110k miles on the clock and he hasn't changed his cam belt even once haha. So he says that it would be a waste of money especially because I've got a chain not belt.

I don't know what to think, he had an incident that a belt snapped in one of his previous cars, he had a mess with the engine but he got it fixed When I visit him next time I'd like to see that 110k miles old belt

Id leave the cam chain for now personally - oh and dont waste your money on that shite!

just use regular 10w40 and youll be fine.

Not sure on exact quantity but a 5lr bottle will see you nicely - get it from Vauxhall - its top stuff!

Cheers mate.. Will go to Vauxhall and will have oil filter and oil from them.. I'll ask them to do it if they don't change crazy money.

And what's wrong with Castrol btw?

    Castrol is utter crap!

over priced attrocious oil (in my opinion)

backed up by a very well trusted engine builder/tuner/engineer I know.

    Each to their own though.

castrol edge is just overblown and overpriced, as Marti says vauxhall 10w/40 semi is perfectly good enough for your engine

Check out the additives of the Vaux oils first

A3/B3 are the ones to go for. Vaux ones I understand don't have the same additives as the likes of Mobil/Halfords etc.

Vauxhall 10w40 Semi synthetic is A3/B4 iirc so you're well covered there!
