    Oil light flashing

    Hey,

I changed my oil today, and now when the revs are at idle the oil light flashes. There are no leaks, and there is no loss of oil (The oil is on full).

If i turn off the engine, and start it again it takes about 5 minutes for this fault to happen.

I'm not sure but i'm thinking this is more electrical than mechanical so that is why i posted it here rather than in one of those sections as i didnt know which one to post in.

The oil light flickers as if i was going to stall the car, but as i said when at idle.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thanks.

Did you put the correct oil in as it sounds too thin and not giving enough oil pressure.

My dad gave me the oil and he's a mechanic so i'm guessing so, which oil should i be using?

    EDIT: Oil is either 5w30 or 5w40 can't remember, i'll go check if i need to.. mk4 1.4 16v ( 1998 )

Also no tapping/odd noises from the engine which suggests the oik pressure is fine right?

this is what i was hoping, and what my dad thinks - but as everyone on here knows more about astras specifically than he does i thought i would get a second opinion

The oil he gave you is too thin. You need 10W40.

Sounds like a pressure problem imo. Possibly, the oil pump is faulty. I would have this looked into by a good mechanic asap, as if the oil pump fails when you are driving, epsecially whilst at speed of using hig revs, it could seriously damage the engine.

The same happened to my Astra (2.0L DTI Year 2000) replaced oil drove for 500Km and the flashes began slowly... and they increase with time...

    No idea what caused it..

Replaced the sender's unit (it was Italian one - I think it was not the original one)
Replaced oil twice with 10W40 oil.
    Replaced oil filter.
    Added some oil additive.

and nothing from the above solved the issue.

ps: checked oil pressure with a gauge, and fount it is 2.5bar at idle. (which should be very good)
