    Astra mk5 1.6 T SRI XP

    Hi everyone

Just had my Beloved Focus ST-2 nicked and written off and I am looking for a replacement. Another ST or VXR were the first things I thought of then I came across the 1.6T SRI XP. Love the fact that it doesn't stand out as much as the ST or VXR and the performance and economy look pretty good too.

Anyone own one of these? Are they as good as they look or should I steer clear?

Thanks for reading and I hope to get to know you all better soon

    Joe

The engines do have their problems. Mainly with one of the pistons failing. And the fuel economy isn't all that good in real life.

If you want a quick-ish Astra that's more subtle than the VXR, try the 2.0 200bhp SRi.

Or even the 1.9 CDTi SRi 150. A simple remap will see it upto 200 horsies and still with all the fuel economy of a derv.

stampede: I thought the SRi 2.0 turbo was 170bhp stock?

Know of a guy who has a 1.6T on the MK5 and has had nothing but problems with it, but couldn't tell you what issues he has had though.

The 5 doors came as 200BHP, I had one before my 1.9cdti and it was fantastic....little bit thirsty though. I think, and I'll be corrected if Im worng, that the 3door 2.0 turbo's were 170BHP and the 5 doors were available as 200BHP.

Arwel is correct the 3-door 2.0Turbo was 170ps 5Door was available as 200ps, either are far better option imo. than a 1.6T. Only benefit with the 1.6T is they replaced the 2.0Turbo options thus will be newer.

Thanks for the good advice guys! Was sooo tempted to get one of these but glad I asked here first . So the theme seems to be that the 1.9cdti with a remap would be the better option. How does the 1.9 drive as standard?

I am well happy with my Sri 150 mate. It's really good on the motorway, getting 50-60 mpg easily. Round town get about 30-35 but I have got a heavy right foot. I can't really think of anything that I am disappointed with mine. I have a tuning box on mine but even standard they pull really well.

Had a look at a 1.9 cdti today and I was pretty put off by the noise from the engine to be honest. I thought modern Diesels were supposed to be quiet..might need to look at the 1.8i vvt..any opinions on this model guys?
