For all those with HIDs, MK4s, MK5s, whatever....

What's the general lifespan of the bulbs / ballasts?

I've read a few where they go really quite quickly.

I bought a set last December. Didn't use them much as i got attention from the law.

Sold them to a member here & he PMd me a few weeks ago saying one or both ballasts had gone (can't remember which now).

8-9 months isn't very long i'd have thought. But i know this isn't the only set that've gone quite quickly.

    Just wondered.

The cheaper units go relatively quickly because by nature they use cheaper parts.

I'd imagine a decent quality ballast should last many years (maybe even the life of a car). There are many factors that could cause them fail - cheap components, where the ballast is attached to the car (ie. heat/water/ribrations/etc).

I bought a cheap set 4 years ago and they still work fine. Had issues with bulbs but you would with non HID bulbs.

My HID bulbs lasted 3 years before the passenger side bulb turned purple.

Laura has had her cheap set (£35 delivered) in for 3 years and still on the same bulb and ballast.

My set (Another £35 delivered set) have been in the main beam of my Astra for 2 years and the same set in my Punto for the last 2 years.

People say they are cheap because they come from China. Where do you think all the other sets are made
