1.3cdti black smoke, lack of power, is this my egr or turbo?

    Hi.

2006 06 astra with 48k on the clock. Anything over 2000 revs and the car makes a funny noise and spews out lots of black smoke. Take your foot of the gas and its gone. This is the same in gear or neutral. I got the car as accident damaged and have fixed it up so I dont know how it drove before but it does seem somewhat gutless...

Is this likely to be the EGR or the turbo, or something else. The noise is not a turbo whistling noise, more of a whirring/grinding sort of noise..

    Thanks for any help

from the description you give i would put my money on the turbo because black smoke is caused by unburnt fuel ie too much fuel/not enough air so because you said that it does it over 2k then that is just about right for the turbo to "kick in" so if it were faulty then your engine would be recieving too much fuel and not enough air hence the black smoke !!!
    hope this helps steve

    Cheers Steve,

I did initially think turbo but I was swayed by the fact that when the turbo went in my vectra the car was billowing out plumes of black smoke at any spped/revs, this is only above 2000 and I can still eventually get to 70 on mway as long as I dont floor it.

Worst case scenario I could get a turbo off ebay circa £120 and of it isnt that resell it, at least it would rule one thing out.

Funnily enough someone else has suggested intercooler. What exactly is it I'm looking for, something leaking from a pipe or a hole sucking air in, or some fluid leaking from the intercooler.

    Cheers again

the intercooler wouldnt cause a "whirring/grinding" noise but it would be a whistling noise which jonny said is isnt doing?

    Hi Steve.

Probably not the best at describing the noise. More of a whoosh if that makes sense

Had a quick look under the bonnet, not had it up on ramps yet and there appears to be quite a bit of oil (looks like engine oil anyway) on the chassis which seems to have come from the top corner by where the intercooler is. When I get time I'll investigate further where its coming from, but as this is miles away from the dipstick and engine oil cap I'd say this would be a good suspect....

if there is oil about and a whoosh sound then it will be a split hose or cracked/split intercoolerjust follow the oil back and check all the way around the hoses
