My mum has a S-reg Vauxhall Astra 1.8, only 62,000 on the clock. However, it's developed some issues over the last couple of weeks and has just failed it's MOT as the ABS light is constantly on.
Mechanic suspects that it is the front off-side ABS unit that has developed a fault because of the "low reading" he has found from checking all four wheels manually - this one is the lowest out of the four (whatever it is that you measure on an ABS system). But he says it's only a 70% chance, as he can't confirm this is the faulty unit as the car's ECU cannot be connected to - he has tried on two systems and it will NOT connect to either computer.
A new ABS will be about £360 to buy and fit, but it may turn out not be at fault. Alternatively, the ECU could be replaced, but this will cost £400.
We're in a real dilemma over what to do: 1) Replace the ABS unit and hopefully it will be sorted; 2) Replace the ECU - and confirm the fault if there is one; 3) Scrap the car.
