Hi GRUMBLE and welcome to the forum.

Maybe its something like a 17D or 17DR? Try looking for the code stamped on the engine block either along where it joins the transmission, near the dipstick if its like my 1996 X17DTL. Mine also has a large X17DTL stamped onto the engine block easily seen from the front.

Others have the code stamped on a flatish spot kind of next to the cambelt cover, kind of near the alternator (assuming your alternator is back left side as seen from standing at the front).

    Cheers, Paul

    Hi Ian,

So where was the code located?

Yeah, we just moved to a windblown seaside place and everything gets regularly covered in salt-spray so I'm expecting much more of a rust problem if we live here for long. In the past I found those rust converter products, rust paint, and undercoat spray helped a lot. Always good to get onto ASAP...

    Cheers, Paul
