Dilema is it worth saving this car!

I have a dilema. The garage are saying they will charge £260 to investigate the problem. Is the car worth fixing?
It is an Astra Club 1.6 X reg, year 2000.
The symbols asking for elctronics check have been coming and going for ages along with occasional stalling. I have taken it to local garage twice when the problem was live, but it just returns. The combination of symptoms are: one of the symbols asking for engine/electronics check, speedometer fails and engine stalls when I stop. This usually hppens when I have driven for a long distance and towards the end of a long journey.
2 days ago it started again, but this time when it stalled it went dead instead of starting again. Now it is at a vauxhall dealers and I don't know if I should continue with this car. I am only the second owner. Serviced annually.

search google or this forum for the paperclip test. sounds like you are paying for their tech 2 as well as them connecting it up. More people than not on here have fault code readers. I have opcom and loads of other members do also. Maybe someone local to you could come round and fire the diagnostics interface on it to see what it comes up with. I am sure someone would do it for free, or a few beer tokens, saving you a small fortune in the process. Win win situation

Thanks for the tip and your time. However the car is in the garage and I can't try anything myself. I think I will let the garage try and fix it this time. If there is no success then I will have to say goodbye to it. Regards - Joy

If it aint under warranty, tell them you are coming down with your own diagnostics tool. They can't do anything other than be pissed at losing out on the ££££ to diagnose your issue.

Don't let vx do it, they will slaughter your bank account with a shocking bill. If they want that to diagnose (basically plug in a code reader) how much do you think the full repair will be?

Get it out of there and up to an independent pronto
