    Is this noise normal?

Hi, I am new to this forum as I've just bought my first Astra. It's an 04 1.7 Eco4 hatchback, with 64,000 miles on the clock.

Everything seems to be working fine and economy is pretty much what I hoped for, but there is one problem that I'm hoping you might have some suggestions about.

At lower speeds (around 30) there is an unpleasant whirring, growly noise particularly when slowing down, and/or changing gear. It is noisier at some times more than others, and does not improve when the engine is warm. Since most of my driving is urban, if this is normal I don't know if I can put up with it. I'm hoping it is something not too expensive that can be fixed!

BTW My last car was an old diesel Mitsubishi Shogun so I am used to driving something that sounds like a double-decker bus, but this noise is very different.

Sounds like it could be something to do with the gearbox? Have you tried dipping the clutch when not in gear to see if the noise comes and goes?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. It's not the wheels, it's definitely engine noise. Next time I drive it I'll make a careful note of exactly when it makes the noise, and whether anything changes its intensity.
