    Petrol "Drinkage" Help

    Hi guys,

I have a MK4 Astra 1.4 LS had it for about 9 months now bought it as 78,000 miles now on 84,000 but the car seems to be drinking a lot of fuel. i cant work out the problem as i don't know much about the mechanical side. I gave it a full service 2 months ago thinking it was the problem it made a difference as £10 gave me nearly 70 miles, not for long though. But now again the fuel usage is taking the piss im considering getting rid. £10 gives me like 30 miles.
Any recommendations guys please, it'll be much appreciated.

I dont know much about the 1.4 16v, but the first thing I'd do is find out if it has an EGR valve. If this is fault, it can cause higher fuel consumption. I believe a good quality delphi replacement is the best thing to buy here.

possible faulty CTS (coolant temp sensor) will cause the engine to burn more fuel if its reading that the coolant isnt warm enough when it really is

Iainmk4Gsi - lol nah not a heavy foot at all. i drive normally, no high revs, no changing gears into say 4th at 20mph or summit.

Hunty-UK - fuel tanks fine i think. no leaking petrol from anywhere on car.

IainL - thanks for the info. just did some googling and yeah my engine (z14xe) does have a EGR valve. i think i read somewhere that you can try cleaning it?

RizoMK1 - thanks for this aswell i will take both these tasks on and see how it goes.

    thanks a lot guys

try not to change to 4th at 20mph, you'll actually make the engine struggle more. the astra is quite heavy with the 1.4 engine not really going to be great on fuel.

    i'd say 3rd upto 20, 4th from 30-35 and 5th from 40 onwards
