Work on 1 can of primer and paint per wheel. Lacquer isn't needed with certain paints so check first ( the wheels below are painted in GLOSS black so are not lacqured). If you take your time and make sure it's right you should be able to get 4 done in a weekend.
Apply light coats multiple times and allow to dry for 30 mins ish. It's all about the preperation...
You don't need to remove all the paint, just make a rough surface for the new lacquer to "key" to...

May sound like obvious advice, but if you're changing the colour then pay as much attention to the inside as you do to the outside. If it's worth doing then do it right!!
It's a piece of piss, really...

Hi there. Heres a how to i made other day for someone else. It is a fairly simple job to do to be honest, just time consuming if you want a good result.

    You need:

Sand paper, ranging from fairly gritty stuff to fine stuff. You can get packs from halfords that have a variety. Get plenty if the alloys are in a bad state.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165610

Metal Filler, iirc i used this stuff.

    Applicators.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165625

Masking tape (if your leaving tyres on)

Primer. 1 1/2 to 2 cans per alloy

Paint. 2 1/2 cans per alloy

Universal laquer. 2 1/2 cans per alloy.

All this lot can be got from halfords. But you may struggle to get all the paint you want in one branch.

Heres a little guide ive sent to someone before.

    1. Start by sanding down the alloys to get rid of any existing product on it.

    2. Clean all dust from sanding off and dry alloy.

    3. Mix filler and apply on kerbing and marks. Ensuring enough is applied so when sanded down it covers kerbing.

    4. When filler has set (Doesnt take long) start by sanding with gritty paper to get it near alloy and shape filler.

    5. Use some medium paper to get it plush with alloys.(dont be scared to put alot of pressure on the paper if in goes wrong you can allways refill it)

    6. Use fine paper to finish it off so its smooth where alloy meets filler. If you feel a ridge when you run your finger over it then sand more until you feel no ridge, if you dont get it smooth you will see it after painting.

    7. Clean alloy and dry.

    8. Tape off tires if your leaving them on.

    9. Apply primer at a good distance ensuring you get it in every gap and each side of spoke etc. Leave to dry for 30 mins or so between coats.

    10. Apply paint same way you applied the primer.

    11. Apply laquer same way you applied primer and paint.

Leave to dry for as long as possible before fitting.

Main thing to remember is not to rush the primering, painting and laquering by spraying it on thick as it will run and look pap and impossible to save without starting the whole primer, paint, laqueer sequence from scratch.

Keep a good distance when spraying to reduce the chance of flooding an area and take your time. If you can get the tyres off it makes it easier, if they are on it makes the edges of the alloy difficult to sand and paint. But not impossible.

With spray cans you are doubtfull to get as good a finish as the pros but if you dont rush and do it properly you can get very good results.

    Hope this helps.

Yup you could, but doing it yourself you'll get a nice sense of achievement. And there are cheaper places to get spray cans than halfords, i just just cant remember where he said. lol.
