    Juddering in 5th gear

    Hi,

My Astra Mk4 1.6 Sxi has recently started juddering in 5th gear. Its when i'm doing about 60mph as soon as i let me foot off the accelerater the car starts to judder like i am tapping the accelerator.

The other day on the way to Edinburgh the car started to do this really badly and all three dash lights started to display (the lights which show before you start the engine), it then did this in 2nd gear and i completely lost all power. Took me about 3 minutes to get the car started again.

Any ideas what it could be as it has made me lose all confidence in the car. Its a 52 plate if that's any help.

    Please help

It could well be the EGR playing up. It's easy enough to sort tho, there's plenty of topics on here about it. Try removing and cleaning it first, it'll only cost you a can of carb cleaner. The EGR valve is located down the back of the engine, bolted to the inlet manifold by 2 torx bolts... you'll need to remove the plastic engine cover to get to it if you have one.

Be aware cleaning it may only be a temp fix if it's foobared tho. New Delphi ones can be had for around the £70 mark

Whats the pedal test (excuse my ignorance)???

EGR was cleaned last night, hasn't cut out yet but i haven't really been that far or on the bypass. However yesterday before the EGR was cleaned it cut out 4 times on the bypass. Had to sit with my foot on the accelerator to keep it running.

Could this be a fuel pump problem if the EGR clean fails?

With engine off, keep your feet on the accelerator and brake and turn your ignition one click so your dash lights up. Watch for the engine management light which will flash sequences of numbers which will let you know what code you have stored in your ECU.

So it might (for example) flash 1 1 1 pause 1 1 1 1 pause 1 which would be 3, 4, 1 so you can look up code 341. My explanation may be a little off, you can search the website for a better desciption or code info.

I think a constant fast flash means there is no code.
