    welding a wishbone

Is it possible or safe to weld a wishbone?

I ask this as one of the ones I bought recently with polybushes in it, has a crack in the raised metal part in the centre of the wishbone, its quite long and I was hoping it could be welded to repair it, rather than have to replace it or find a way of either getting the polybushes out to put them in another wishbone (if this is even possible)

on later models the poly bushes are a 2 part design with a sleeve thru the middle which just pushes in place so removal will be a doddle

if the mk3 is different then they may need pressing out in the same way the OE ones do

i cant see welding it to be a problem providing u use a good gauge of steel and do it properly

These are the bones in question, they are powerflex bushes, dunno how old they where, but came off the car after being on for about 500 miles, so I'm told. Can only assume (without checking) they are like you say GeordieBandit, that they are a two part design, but do recall the lad who did it saying they where a right bugger to get in

Its just the one thats cracked, I'm now thinking it might be easier to get another from the scrappy, pref from a low mileage car, or with OE bones, not too bothered if the bushes are gone, just a case of swapping the polybushes over

not worth welding and wouldnt anyways, will always been a weak point of the wishbone.

I would even go to the scrap yard as you dont know what kinda life they have had.

For how much they are to buy new its not worth even thinking of doing anything else.

I've priced up pattern parts, but for the most part the trouble with them is that the metal wears thin around the bushes (so I've been told)
And yes you could argue that the bones from a scrap car have had an unknown life, which I can understand the point. But I guess there though is I can check for their condition and in theory if they came off a low mileage car then they should be ok, even if I am gonna burn the old bushes out and swap over the polybushes
