    Nasty Metallic scrape/grinding noise

The car has developed a nasty metallic scraping/grinding noise from the front passengers side wheel arch area.

I've taken a look and couldnt work out what it could be, nothing appears to be catching and theres no play anywhere. spinning the wheel by hand didn't cause it to make the noise.

Its not constant and isn't consistent with when it happens, although it seems to get worse after driving for a while (long enough for everything to heat up)

The disc backing plate was a bit close to the disc but I've bent this back out of the way. it made no difference to the noise.

Any ideas on what it could be??

    Cheers

    Matt

have you checked the inner brake pad as sometimes they wear quicker than the outer one ?

As others have said wheel bearing, brakes or CV joints could be the problem.

brakes are fine, they were only replaced a few months back - theres still loads left of the discs and pads.

most likely the bearing or CV then?

my wheel isnt going to fall off is it?

you should jack up the car and check to see if there is any play in the wheel.

if the grinding is only there when driving then it could be the diff.

does the noise get worse when cornering ?

I've checked for play and there isnt any anywhere

when the noise starts its worse when cornering, it then becomes more constant

take the wheel off and check the stone guard tin isnt touching the disc. its the thin piece of tin that sits behind the disc, can sometimes be bent in or knocked to touch the disc.
