    2002-03 Astra G 1.6 16v

    Hi Guys

I am looking for an Astra as above to replace my Saxo VTR.
I went to see a 3dr 03 car tonight and i was disappointed as to how slow it was. Right up to redline even in 1st felt to have no pull and the brakes were terrible.
Are all the 1.6's this slow or was it a bad one? up a steepish hill in 3rd had nothing to give at all.
Lovely comfy seats though an i really do like the interior. It had a slight misfire at low revs which disappeared higher up so i think it may not have been looked after.
Anything sepcific to look out for?
Oh and hi eveyone. Im new here

The engine is better at higher rpm's, 2500-3000 is when it tends to kick in the power on standard engines.

Lack of servicing will affect things, new plugs/air filter will be a major benefit.

Brakes aren't the best but a fluid change and possibly a change of discs and pads wil help, never had any major issues with the brakes on my 1.6 16v, though after upgrading them to larger 280mm discs helped loads (£200 or so depending where you source the parts).

Misfire could be old plugs, could be an EGR valve playing up (common) or maybe faulty coilpack.

It had full history, just has plugs and coils in march, didnt feel to have any step up in performance through rev range, just felt flat.

I've only driven one standard Z16XE recently and it did feel a bit flatter compared to mine which is reasonably modified now though I also put this down to lack of servicing on the one I drove. Had mine since new (8 years now) and never had any major issues with performance.

A straight through catback exhaust and Vectra C diesel intake pipes will give it a little lift, mine was rolling roaded at 117bhp/131ftlbs with these mods vs the 98bhp/113ftlbs Vauxhall give for the OEM figures.

New plugs etc. suggests it isn't those, could be a faulty EGR valve, these can give a funny misfire at low speeds and hit performance higher up if they are sticking. £65 for a Delphi one and very easy to replace, 2 bolts and 10 minutes.

Best way - if you're not happy with one, walk away, there are plenty of these out there

Yeah, it took me 2 month to find a unmodified Saxo VTR, then 10 days later it got written off by some one sideswiping it
    Ah well accidents happen.
Going to look at 2 or 3 Astra's tommorow so here's hoping!

Keep in mind that a saxo vtr is a little rocket and you are looking at a 1.6 astra. Try a 1.8 and a 2.0 and then compare.
The astra is a bit heavier then a saxo so give that engine a chance

Yeah the Saxo was nippy, it was more the fact that the Saxo at least felt like it wanted to rev, put your foot down and it made an effort to move, the Astra felt almost like it was holding back? Seemed reluctant to rev
